Tackling economic exclusion & worklessness through skills
Strategic Lead: Jobcentre Plus
The challenge for the esp is to ensure that the region’s investments in skills and economic renewal generate real returns with a lasting impact on the economic capacity and future of economically excluded people, and on the way in which mainstream services are delivered. Strengthening the link between employment and disadvantaged communities has clear advantages, delivering on a range of policy areas that bring social and economic benefits.
As a result of the work of the esp Task and Finish Group for Tackling Economic Exclusion and Worklessness through Skills, Job Multi Agency Employment Teams (JobMAETs), a three-year programme funded by the European Social Fund (ESF), has been initiated to help disadvantaged people move back into employment in the East Midlands.
The JobMAETs programme, contracted through the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), will target some of the most disadvantaged people within local communities, including lone parents, people who have disabilities and health conditions, the homeless, and ex-offenders, and help them to gain the training and skills they need to return to work.
The DWP contracted providers will work together with the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) “Skills for Jobs” programme, also supported by ESF, and in partnership with the private and voluntary sectors, to break down barriers to work, and offer people the specialist support that they need, to tackle unemployment and inactivity.
